Winner of the Prix Claude Arrieu from Sacem in 2016 and the Audience Prize at the 2006 Boulogne International Young Composers Competition (Philippe Hersant was jury president), Laurent Lefrançois graduated from the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris in orchestration and composition, in Michel Merlet's class. He studied harmony and counterpoint with Stéphane Delplace, and composition and orchestration with Guillaume Connesson.
He has already been commissioned by several institutions, including the Festival Présences 2004 at Radio France with the Ensemble Alternance; Proquartet / CEMC in 2006 with the Quatuor Modigliani and Lise Berthaud; Alla breve at Radio France; the Festival de Montpellier and Radio France in 2007; the Festival de l'Emperi at Salon de Provence in 2009 with Ria Ideta and Paul Meyer...
His piece “Transatlantique”, commissioned by the Douai Conservatory Orchestra, was premiered at the Henri Dutilleux Auditorium on December 9, 2014 by the Sinfonietta conducted by Frédéric Lodéon.
Laurent Lefrançois's monographic album “Balnéaire” (Evidence label, 2014) received rave reviews from the prestigious Gramophone and Diapason magazines, and featured performances by renowned musicians (Paul Meyer, clarinet, Magali Mosnier, flute, Ria Ideta, marimba, Quatuor Parisii...).
The premiere of his “Clarinet Concerto”, commissioned by “Musique Nouvelle en Liberté”, in May 2016 in Rouen in the interpretation of clarinetist Paul Meyer alongside the Orchestre de l'Opéra de Rouen, was warmly received.
In July 2018, Laurent Lefrançois' “Concertino” for E-flat clarinet premiered in Ostend on the occasion of ClarinetFest, featuring Séverine Sierens on E-flat clarinet and the Orchestre de la Garde républicaine conducted by Sébastien Billard.
His latest album “Crystal palace” (Evidence Classics), released in June 2022, features his orchestral work “Nouveau Balnéaire” as well as the clarinet concerto, the clarinet concertino in E-flat and “Siguirya” for flute and string orchestra, alongside the Orchestre Victor Hugo Franche Comté with Paul Meyer, clarinet, Pierre Génisson, E-flat clarinet and Magali Mosnier, flute. The album was awarded 5 Diapasons and featured in the “Choix de France Musique”.
His sextet “Nord Sud”, commissioned by the Australian ensemble Omega (in residence at the Sidney Opera House), premiered in Sydney and Melbourne in December 2022.
Laurent Lefrançois was artist-in-residence at the “Ma Vigne en musique, Narbonne Classique Festival 2022/23” festival.
